Happy Birthday

At 8:53 and 8:54 our boys officially turned 5. Can you believe it? I can't. It seems like yesterday that we were finding out we were pregnant. Quite the surprise when only 2 months earlier we had been in Oregon adopting a beautiful baby girl. "You will never conceive and carry another baby" I will never forget the fertility doctor saying that. At the time it cut my soul like dagger. Now it makes me laugh...never put God in the "can't" category :)
A few weeks after the initial shock came the bigger shock...it was identical twins. Laying on the ultrasound table I was shaking so hard they had to stop the ultrasound. This could not be, I had an 8 yr old and a 3 month old...it could be and it was. We were going to be parents of 4 kids...3 of whom would be born within 11 months. The twins were due July 8 ( a little more than a month shy of Olivia's first birthday).

I should have known it would not be that easy to calculate. The pregnancy was relatively uneventful, well except for the fact there were 2 babies and I was labeled "Advanced Maternal Age". But other than the crowded womb and wounded ego, it was pretty calm. That is until the wee hours of May 15, 2005. Suddenly we were speeding down I-24 making phone calls to everyone we knew that would wake up at 4 in the morning to pray. Our babies were going to be born that day, I was only 32 weeks along. We were scared, no other way to say it.

Once at the hospital, the staff went into red alert mode...AMA mother, twins, 32 weeks, that combo apparently catches the attention of medical personnel. After a whirlwind of iv's, monitors, nurses, doctors and ultrasounds it was determined that Joshua's sack had ruptured that morning but Lucas's fluid was dangerously low, his sack had ruptured maybe the day before. An emergency c-section was the plan. So at 8:53 Joshua David came into the world weighing 3lb 10 oz. Then 1 minute later at 8:53 Lucas Stout followed his brother into the world at 3lb 6oz. They were so tiny and fragile. Those early hours are a big blur to me. I have vague memories of asking about apgar scores, my bed being wheeled into the NICU, friends dropping by. The days that followed were rough, but our boys quickly proved themselves fighters. Within days they were labeled "feeder, grower" which in NICU terms meant that there were NO major health concerns other than weight. Lucas' jaundice was under control so all they had to do was grow. What a blessing!
At about 2 weeks old we were allowed to put them in the same isolette for a short "visit".
In a few weeks they were home with us....Then the real fun started :) I would tell you all about their first year but I don't remember it...seriously.

I love this picture. It looks like they are sharing a great story...or...planning a great scheme.
No walk down memory lane would be complete without the triple stroller that defined us for so many years :)

Putting them to bed on their first birthday.

When I checked on them last night, this is what I found. Five years after sharing a womb, they still sleep on top of each other. I guess when you were once the same person this makes you feel as if all is right.

So Happy 5th Birthday Joshua and Lucas. I love you forever, I like you for always, As long as I'm living, My babies you'll be.

Jammie Day

The kids are out of school again today. We went to the library yesterday so we are stocked up on books and videos so Olivia declared today an official "Jammie Day". Here is what that looks like at our house...

Joshua with his "night nights"

Lucas curled up with a fuzzy blanket.

Olivia in 2 sets of jammies (layered on top of each other) one of my purses, an American Girl book and her night night not far behind.

And in just a few minutes....

Olivia, in the same ensemble (jazzed up with white patent dress shoes and a rousing rendition of Jesus Messiah)....

wait for it...

Happy is the girl whose fashion sense is her own and the world is her playground.

Comfort Food

You know there are times when you just want comfort food. Those foods are different for each person and in my case the food varies based on the situation. For instance, when I miss my mom it's soup beans, fried potatoes and kraut (don't judge). When I feel sorry for myself its spaghetti and meatballs or meatloaf. When I am overwhelmed with life it is usually pizza or cheeseburgers. You know, a girl has to have variety :)

This weekend brought devastation to Nashville and the surrounding areas. The images are unbelievable and they continue to worsen. If you do not live in middle TN, I am sure you have no idea how bad it really is. The national media has not done it justice. All that said, last night I wanted comfort food on a global scale. My answer, broccoli casserole. Can I tell you it was the most delicious broccoli I have ever eaten. Anticipation and emotions really play into our tastes, don't you agree? It was probably an average casserole but last night it was perfect. :0

I thought I would share my recipe in case any of you need some comfort of the carb loaded, cheese driven variety.

LeAnn's Comfort Broccoli

1 bag frozen broccoli (thawed and chopped into small bite size chunks)

2 cups cooked rice

1 jar cheez whiz

1 cup mayo

1 can cream of chicken soup

1 can cream of mushroom soup

1 medium onion (chopped)

1 stalk of celery (chopped)

1 large clove of garlic (grated)

1 stick of butter

Saute onions and celery in butter. When clear, add garlic. Saute another minute and remove from heat. In large bowl combine all other ingredients. Add onion mixture and stir until well combined. Bake in a greased 9x13 casserole dish. I baked it at 375 for around 50 minutes. I like my casseroles a little crusty on the edges and brown on the top.

Anyway, that is it...a little veggies, a lot of calories, even more comfort.

The great flood

God told Noah to build an ark.
Jesus walked on water.
Peter tried to walk on water.
Jesus preached from a boat.
The disciples road in a boat.
The disciples panicked in a boat.
Jesus calmed the storm.

There is "water" all over the Bible... (since I am a baptist, I left out the water into wine thing :) ok, that was a joke, don't get all bent out of shape) Anyway, the point is, water is a sustainer of life, physical and spiritual. Our bodies must have water to live. Scripture describes Jesus as the giver of living water (John 4:10). In Jeremiah 2 God refers to himself as "The Fountain of Living Water". The point being that water is our life on earth and in heaven...we must have water.

Here I am on a Monday morning, absolutely stricken with the power of water. Living very close to Nashville and seeing my beloved landmarks in ruins. The Batman building has 20 feet of water in it. The Opryland Hotel has 6 feet of water in it. Downtown Nashville is flooded. Bellevue, is nearly a complete loss. Interstate 40 is closed from Nashville to Dickson. A school floated down I-24...yes, that's right A SCHOOL. There are piles of cars that were washed into buildings. There are houses in the middle of streets. There are foundations with no houses in sight, all washed away.
In most of Nashville there are still water rescues going on. People are still stranded on rooftops, waiting for boats. Thousands in shelters (1500 of whom were evacuated from the Opryland...can imagine paying for the Opryland and getting a public high school and a blanket?) There are countless big trucks trapped between closures on I-40. They are estimating damage to be in the billions of dollars.

Closer to home, our neighborhood faired quite well. We have 2 neighbors dealing with a hole in their yards, but that is it. In fact, yesterday afternoon, we had an impromptu neighborhood football game in a front yard. We were all soaked, but laughing. The kids were having the time of their lives...what a difference a few miles can make. Our county has lots of damage but not as far reaching as Davidson (Nashville) and Williamson (Franklin, Brentwood).

You know, in all of this I reminded that God is the God of the storm, the raging waters, even the trickling streams. He is still on the throne. He is and always will be God. One of my favorite worship songs is simply titled "Still". The lyrics...

Hide me now
Under Your wings
Cover me
Within Your mighty hand
When the oceans rise and thunders roar
I will soar with You above the storm
Father you are King over the flood
I will be still and know You are God
Find rest my soul
In Christ alone
Know His power
In quietness and trust
When the oceans rise and thunders roar
I will soar with You above the storm
Father You are king over the flood
I will be still and know You are God
That is my prayer for all of middle TN today...may those homeless, devoid of earthly possessions find rest in their souls. May they seek shelter in this present storm in the hand of God.
Pray for all those in need today. Pray for the leaders and public servants who will literally wade through the recovery of our state capital.
